July Wellness Focus: Back Pain Relief with Physiotherapy and Massage

July Wellness Focus: Back Pain Relief with Physiotherapy and Massage

NOLAN HILL·Physio & Massage

Winter backs hurt from stillness; summer backs hurt from enthusiasm. July brings its own classic triggers — and a combined physio-plus-massage approach handles them beautifully.

Summer's back pain triggers

  • Road trips — hours of sustained sitting, often followed immediately by unloading a packed trunk
  • Yard and reno projects — repetitive bending, lifting, and a "finish it this weekend" mindset
  • Golf season — rotational loading the spine hasn't felt since September
  • Sleep away from home — campsite pads and hotel mattresses change spinal support for days at a time

The common thread: sudden spikes in load on a back that spent months at lower capacity.

The physiotherapy half: build and fix

Physiotherapy addresses the capacity problem. A targeted program strengthens hips, glutes, and trunk so spikes in demand land on muscle, not on joints and discs. If pain has already arrived, hands-on treatment — joint mobilization, soft tissue release, dry needling where guarding is stubborn — settles symptoms quickly, and direction-specific exercises keep you improving at home.

Smart habits help, too: break long drives every 60-90 minutes with two minutes of walking; alternate heavy yard tasks with lighter ones; warm up before the first tee instead of after the third hole.

The massage half: release and recover

Massage therapy keeps working tissue happy. Deep tissue work clears the accumulating tension of project season, sports massage speeds recovery between rounds and runs, and relaxation work keeps the nervous system from amplifying every ache. For most active adults, a session every three to four weeks through summer is cheap insurance.

Better together

Released muscles respond better to strengthening; stronger bodies hold massage results longer. At our clinic the two run as one coordinated plan, with shared notes and direct billing on both.
