Exercise Prescription & Therapeutic Exercise in NW Calgary

Exercise is medicine — when it's dosed correctly. Your physiotherapist designs a progressive program matched to your injury, fitness level, and goals, then coaches you through it.

Why Patients Choose Us

The details that matter when you need expert care.

Truly individualized

Built from your assessment — not a generic printout of clamshells and stretches.

Progressive by design

Programs evolve as you get stronger, so you never plateau or flare up.

Technique coaching

Every exercise taught hands-on until you own the movement.

Home & gym friendly

Plans built around the equipment you actually have access to.

Clear dosage

Sets, reps, load, and tempo specified — so you know exactly what 'enough' means.

Outcome tracked

Strength and function re-tested so progress is visible, not guessed.

Why exercise prescription beats "just exercise"

Movement heals — but the right movement, at the right dose, at the right time. Too little stimulus and tissue never adapts; too much too soon and you flare up and lose confidence. Exercise prescription is the clinical skill of finding that window and moving it forward week after week.

At Nolan Hill Physiotherapy & Massage, every program starts with a detailed assessment: your injury and its stage of healing, your strength and mobility baselines, your daily demands, and what you actually enjoy doing — because the best program is the one you'll do.

Who benefits

  • Rehab patients — structured loading is the engine of recovery for nearly every musculoskeletal injury
  • Post-surgical patients — progressive programs aligned to surgical protocols
  • Chronic pain — graded activity that rebuilds capacity without fear or flare-ups
  • Office workers — counteracting the postures of desk life with targeted mobility and strength
  • Older adults — strength, bone health, and balance work that protects independence and prevents falls
  • Athletes — bridging the gap between "cleared" and genuinely ready to perform

What your program includes

  1. Movement assessment — identifying restrictions, weaknesses, and compensation patterns
  2. Program design — exercises selected and dosed (sets, reps, load, tempo, frequency) for your stage and goals
  3. Coaching — hands-on technique teaching in clinic, with cues that make sense
  4. Progression — regular reviews where the plan advances with you
  5. Re-testing — objective measures that prove the program is working

The long game

The patients who do best aren't the ones who find a magic exercise — they're the ones with a sensible plan they follow consistently. We make that easy with clear instructions, realistic time demands, and 7-day-a-week access for check-ins and progressions. Call 587-355-3555 to get started.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about this service.

How is this different from seeing a personal trainer?

Physiotherapists are university-trained health professionals who prescribe exercise around injuries, surgeries, and medical conditions. For healthy training, a good trainer is great — when pain or pathology is in the picture, clinical exercise prescription is the safer, faster route. Many patients graduate from us to a trainer.

How often will my program change?

Typically every 2-4 weeks. As your capacity grows, your program progresses — load, complexity, or volume — to keep driving adaptation.

What if an exercise causes pain?

Mild, settling discomfort can be part of productive rehab; sharp or lingering pain is a signal to adjust. We teach you the traffic-light rules so you always know whether to push, modify, or stop — and we're a phone call away.

Do I need gym equipment?

No. Programs are designed around what you have — bodyweight, bands, household items, or a full gym. Equipment helps at later stages, but consistency matters far more.
