Rethinking concussion recovery

A concussion is a functional injury to the brain — and like any injury, it responds to the right rehabilitation. Research has moved decisively away from prolonged total rest ("cocooning"). After 24-48 hours of relative rest, graded, symptom-guided activity helps the brain recover faster. The challenge is knowing how much, how soon, and which systems need specific retraining. That's what our concussion program provides.

What we assess

Concussion symptoms come from several overlapping systems, and effective treatment depends on identifying yours:

  • Vestibular system — dizziness, motion sensitivity, imbalance
  • Visual/oculomotor system — eye strain, difficulty tracking or focusing, screen intolerance
  • Cervical spine — headache and dizziness driven by whiplash-type neck injury
  • Autonomic/exertion tolerance — symptoms that flare with physical effort
  • Cognitive load tolerance — difficulty with concentration and mental fatigue

Your rehabilitation plan

Based on your profile, your physiotherapist builds a plan that may include vestibular rehabilitation, gaze stabilization and visual exercises, hands-on cervical spine treatment, sub-symptom-threshold aerobic exercise (a cornerstone of modern concussion care), and a stepwise return-to-learn, return-to-work, or return-to-sport progression with clear criteria at each stage.

Concussions from car accidents and work injuries

Many of the concussions we see in NW Calgary come from motor vehicle collisions and workplace incidents — often paired with whiplash. Treatment for these is typically covered under Section B auto insurance benefits or WCB, and our team handles the paperwork and reporting so you can focus on recovery.

When to seek care

If you've hit your head and experience worsening headache, repeated vomiting, confusion, or loss of consciousness, seek emergency care immediately. Once serious injury has been ruled out — or if lingering symptoms just aren't clearing weeks after a "mild" concussion — book an assessment. Persistent symptoms respond to targeted rehab at any stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about this service.

How long does concussion recovery take?

Most concussions resolve within 2-4 weeks with appropriate management. Symptoms lasting longer (post-concussion syndrome) usually indicate a specific system — vestibular, visual, cervical, or exertional — that needs targeted rehab rather than more rest.

Should I rest in a dark room until symptoms are gone?

No — that advice is outdated. Current guidelines recommend 24-48 hours of relative rest, then gradual reintroduction of activity guided by symptoms. Prolonged strict rest is associated with slower recovery.

Can you treat concussions that happened months ago?

Yes. Persistent post-concussion symptoms respond well to targeted vestibular, visual, cervical, and graded-exercise rehab even months after the injury.

Do I need imaging (CT/MRI) before starting concussion rehab?

Not usually. Concussion is a functional injury that doesn't show on standard imaging, which is reserved for ruling out more serious injury when red flags are present. We screen carefully and refer if anything concerns us.

Is concussion treatment covered after a car accident?

Yes — concussion rehabilitation is typically covered under Alberta's Section B auto insurance benefits after an MVA. We bill the insurer directly and handle the required reporting.
